Musa tyrelis swamp is one of the attractions of Zagare Regional Park. The first part of this trail was built in 2015 and became one of the most visited natural objects in Northern Lithuania. Here people can see one of the largest wetlands in the region with forests, natural and cultural heritage sites. Musa tyrelis nature trail is included in the Lithuanian Book of Records as the longest wooden trail in the swamp (4480 m in length). In the spring of 2019 the second part of this nature trail was completed and its opening event took place on the 26th of April 2019. On the 26th of April 2019 the opening event of the second part of Musa tyrelis nature trail was held. During the event, Mindaugas Balciunas, Director of Zagare Regional Park, presented the project " Zemgale by Bicycle", implemented by the Directorate, Musa tyrelis nature trail and its history. Interparliamentary relations groups of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania with the Republic of Latvia and the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia also participated in the event. Kęstutis Masiulis, Chairman of the Interparliamentary Relations Group of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania with the Republic of Latvia Saeima thanked the employees of UAB Joniskio hidrostatyba Vytautas Barauskas, Adolfas Sadauskas, Saulius Virmauskas and Povilas Stonkaitis for their honest, diligent and responsible work and Gerda Kinderiene for her initiative, diligence, and significant contribution to the popularity of the Musa tyrelis nature trail. After cutting the symbolic log, all the participants of the event have been invited to walk around the Musa tyrelis nature trail with educational and entertaining elements. At each stop on the trail, an unexpected, original storyteller was waiting for attendees. Near Miknaiciai Lake the specialist of the Lithuanian Geological Survey Jonas Satkunas introduced the formation of the Musa tyrelis swamp. Another surprise on the trail – the Laume (fairy) of the Musa tyrelis swamp, which offered everyone a chance to bathe in the swamp water which is magical and everyone stays forever young and beautifully. Saulius Mitrikas introduced rare species of the birds living in the swamp. Adele Karaliunaite, a well-known herbalist in Lithuania, greeted the participants of the event at the flora stop of the trail. With her knowledge, the herbalist not only told the tale, but also gave a chance to taste the products she made from the swamp plants. Approaching the drier part of the swamp, the participants of the event welcomed the dean of Joniskis Eduardas Semaska and told about the tree-chapel and Father Stanislovas. He blessed the chapel, Musa tyrelis nature trail and the participants of the event. It is not a secret that several wolf families live in the forests of Zagare Regional Park. “One of the wolves“ we also met during the opening of the Musa tyrelis nature trail. The owner of “Zverincius“ presented this animal, told about the peculiarities of wolf behavior. In front of Tyrelis stone club “Baltu vikingai“ presented our ancestors. They told about mythology, faith, rites and celebrations, showed spectacular outfits, weapon reconstructions and fighting using them. On the way to the former partisans camp, another surprise awaited. Partisans allow only their own members to enter the campsite, so first everybody had to tell them the password that gave the access to the campsite. From the partisans campsite, participants took a new path back towards the eastern shore of Lake Miknaiciai. Two more stops awaited here. NATURA 2000 Network of Protected Areas of European Interest and its habitats in the Musa tyrelis swamp were presented by the ecologist Vaidotas Grigaliunas of the Zagare Regional Park Directorate. Urte Kinderyte and Teja Zigmantaite, who embodied butterflies, told about insects of the reserve and rare species of them. After the hike participants of the event were invited by Juodeikiai community chairwoman Egle Ginkuviene and Gaizaiciai elder Stanislava Andrulaitiene to freshen up with juice, homemade cheese or cake. After that, the participants went to the Laume homestead near the Musa tyrelis swamp. Here they tasted dishes of the culinary heritage of Joniskis region, while Laurita Peleniute taught “Promociu giesmes“ (Promo hymns). The historian, archaeologist dr. Ernestas Vasiliauskas helped translating into Latvian and Lithuanian. During the event, a meeting of the Parliamentary Group of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania with the Republic of Latvia and the Parliamentary Group of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia was held, where members discussed cooperation on energy, transport and security issues and discussed further parliamentary cooperation. During the meeting, Vitalijus Gailius, Mayor of Joniskis District Municipality, proposed the Baltic Unity Day 2021 to organize in Joniskis district. Unfortunately, at the moment visitors have to go the same trail back when walking in the wetland. In order to preserve, organize and adapt important objects and territories for the future generations, considerable funds is required. Directorate of Zagare Regional Park is constantly preparing various projects for receiving financial assistance from the European Union.
